10 things to do around Morzine / Les Gets in the summer months

There is more to Morzine, Les Gets, and the Portes du Soleil than skiing. The summer months are amazing, and not just for mountain biking. Have a look below at alternative activities and days out that make the local area an ideal base year-round.

1.   Golf

Many people are surprised to learn that there are a number of golf courses in the Portes du Soleil.

Les Gets is home to an 18-hole course. This fairly technical golf course offers panoramic views and great facilities. The golf course clubhouse is a welcoming place to enjoy a drink and the restaurant has a lovely terrace on which to enjoy lunch. Coaching, equipment hire and electric buggies are all available. With stunning mountain views and pleasant summer weather, this is a wonderfully relaxing way to spend the day.

There is also a 9 hole golf course in Avoriaz with amazing views of the mountains from its elevated position. Enjoy a round of golf and a drink and some food from the restaurant at the clubhouse.

2.    Parcs des Dérêches and Morzine Equestrian Centre

The Morzine Equestrian Centre is located in the heart of the pedestrian area of the Parcs des Dérêches, along the banks of the Dranse river.

You will find numerous activities in the Dérêches park including tennis and padel courts, a swimming pool complex, an indoor ice rink, a tree-top adventure park, and a large kids playground area! The Dérêches also has 5 km of walking trails that wind through the forest and along the river, linking Morzine to Montriond. It is an ideal place for families to spend a day full of sporty activities.

Visit the Parc des Derechos website for details of all activities including the horse riding school and swimming pool opening hours. https://www.parc-dereches.com/en

3.    The Portes du Soleil Multipass

The Multipass is a pass that gives you free or discounted access to 60 activities across the Portes du Soleil area.

You can purchase the Multipass for 14€ per person, per day, however, if with an accommodation provider who has registered with the scheme, the price drops to only 3€ per person, per day making summer activity holidays in the region incredibly affordable.

Activities included range from swimming pools and the resort chair lifts, to tennis courts and trampolines, to museums and mini-golf.

You can find all the details about the Multipass including accommodation providers here.

4.    Via Ferrata

Via Ferrata is a sport pioneered in the Alps. It is a fixed climbing route where climbers are attached to a steel cable that runs along the entire route, limiting any fall. The cable is periodically fixed to the rock, and you may find additional climbing aids, such as iron rungs, pegs, carved steps, and even ladders and bridges, depending on the route.

There are Via Ferrata routes near Morzine in Avoriaz, St Jean D’Aulps, La Chapelle-d’Abondance and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval.

Find out about local routes and guides here. https://en.morzine-avoriaz.com/via-ferrata-1.html

5.  Whitewater Activities

For the more adventurous you can head down the valley for a refreshing dip in the Alpine water melting from the higher mountains. Several mountain rivers now include equipment designed for fun descents by different methods including rafting, canyoning and kayaking.

We would always recommend exploring the whitewater adventures with an expert, local guide such as Frogs Rafting. https://www.frogsrafting.com/en/

6.    Electric Mountain Bikes

E-mountain biking is on the up-and-up across the Portes du Soleil. Most resorts have marked e-bike trails so you can explore the area with relative ease. There are 34 free recharging stations spread out to ensure you can make the most of the 300km of e-biking trails on offer without running out of power.

E-bikes are heavier than regular mountain bikes so if you do not want to bring yours with you, or are interested in trying it out, there are hire shops in the Portes du Soleil villages.

Find the Portes du Soleil e-bike network and information here. https://en.portesdusoleil.com/in-summer/vttae/

7.    Road Cycling

As well as some of the best mountain biking and e-mountain biking in the Alps, the Portes du Soleil region has amazing road riding.

It is a cyclist’s paradise with numerous mapped itineraries starting from Morzine, and several local guiding companies who can show you around if you wish.

There are 25 mountain passes within 50 km, several of them internationally known like the col de Joux-Verte and col de la Colombière, as the area has regularly hosted the Tour de France.

8.    Day trip to Évian les Bains

Head down the valley from Morzine and in under an hour you will be in Évian les Bains. Situated on Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) with stunning views across to Switzerland, great restaurants and bars, and the famous Evian Casino.

It is, of course, also the home of Evian water and there is a little museum that you can visit in the town centre.

Visit the Evian website for information about the town.  https://www.evian-tourisme.com/

9.     Day trip to Chamonix Mont-Blanc

With a drive of only one hour from Morzine and Les Gets, Chamonix is a beautiful destination for a day out.  Visit the Mer de Glace by train or take the l’Aiguille du Midi cable car to a height of 3842m for amazing views of the surrounding glaciers and mountains.

Chamonix also has a bustling town centre with many shops from well known outdoor sports brands. For another unforgettable experience, visit the spa where you can relax in the outdoor pools against a wonderful mountain backdrop.

10.     Day Trip to Annecy

Annecy is an hour and a half drive from Morzine along the autoroute, with stunning mountain views on the way. The old town is wonderful to wander around, with some great shopping and a good selection of bars and restaurants. Annecy is set on the banks of Lac Annecy, the third largest lake in France. There are plenty of parks along the shore where you can relax with a picnic for the day, or hire a row boat or even a small engine boat and explore the waters. For the more sporty, you can also hire some bikes and take the flat cycle path around the lake.
