In full view of the Aiguilles rising above the Chamonix Valley, Les Houches, a scattering of hamlets set among deep forests and rolling Alpine meadows, is still the ‘sentinel of Mont Blanc’. It’s the perfect place to introduce children gently to the high mountains, to the sound of rushing mountain streams.
The village resort of Les Houches is located in the Chamonix valley in the Haute Savoie, only 6km from Chamonix, the world capital of skiing and mountaineering. Les Houches lies in the heart of the Mont-Blanc region which is made up of 13 other resorts : Chamonix, Servoz, Vallorcine, Megève, St Gervais, Les Contamines, Praz-sur-Arly, Combloux, Cordon, Domancy, Passy, Sallanches… Situated at 1000 metres of altitude and lying at the foot of Mont-Blanc (4810m), Les Houches offers an exceptional panorama of the peaks surrounding Chamonix.
The village is made up of a number of hamlets, with oratories, chapels, old bread ovens and farms bearing witness to its past and being the objects of particular attention today.
With a 4635 hectare surface and 3070 inhabitants (Houchards – in 2010), Les Houches extends over 8 km between Servoz and Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, on the Arve valley on two hillsides of high crystalline chains : Mont Blanc in the East and the Aiguilles Rouges on the West. The administrative centre of Houches, in 1000 meters of height, is practically directly above the Mont Blanc massif. The municipal limit is situated under the Mont Blanc, in the Dome du Goûter at 4304 meters of height. And from the massif of Aiguilles Rouges, this limit peaks in the Aiguillette of Brévent at 2350 meters of height.
